  • Are there any specific or prior illnesses that would make my pet ineligible?

    Yes, unfortunately pets that have experienced cancer, diabetes, untreatable hypoglycemia, leukemia or the AIDS virus would be ineligible for coverage.

  • What is considered to be a pre-existing health condition and does this program accept pets with pre-existing conditions?

    A pre-existing condition is considered a non-chronic condition that your pet received treatment for within the previous six months. Illness or injury that existed prior to the effective date of the policy is not covered unless your pet has been symptom-free for a period of 180 days.

  • Are there age eligibility limits?

    Yes, eligible animals include dogs eight weeks old to eight years old and cats eight weeks old to ten years old. Age is determined by the calendar year in which the animal was born regardless of the month.

  • Can my dog or cat be eligible if he's/she's older than the stated age eligibility limits?

    Yes, if they are covered by Healthy Pet Insurance prior to reaching the stated age of ineligibility (8 years of age for dogs and 10 years of age for cats).

  • Are there any specific breeds that are not eligible for full coverage under Healthy Pet Insurance?

    Shar-Pei and Shar Pei mixes are eligible only for injury coverage. Illness benefits cannot be covered for this breed, because of its unique physical characteristics.

  • Can I use any veterinarian?

    Yes, Healthy Pet Insurance allows pet owners to choose their own veterinarian, as long as they are licensed in the jurisdiction in which they practice.

  • Are congenital or hereditary disease covered?

    Congenital diseases are not covered—this is defined as any disorder or condition, which was present at birth.

  • Is euthanasia covered?

    Yes, when it is agreed between you and your vet that this is required for humane reasons.

  • Is there a discount for more than one pet?

    Yes, there is a multi-pet discount of $20.

  • What are the policy limits?

    You have two limits in your policy. The first is a per illness or injury limit. The second is the annual limit. If you have two illnesses requiring vet services in the policy year totaling $1,000 your annual limit is reduced by this amount.

  • Is there a deductible?

    Yes, the policy has an annual aggregate deductible of $100. What this means is that the first $100 of out-of-pocket expenses is not insured. You have to spend that amount before the insurance will respond.

  • Are there maximum coverage limits for specific procedures?

    There is no schedule of benefits, or limitations for certain procedures. Your per illness or accident limit and the annual policy limit will determine the amount available to pay for a procedure. The policy will reimburse reasonable costs.

  • Does the policy cover accident and illness only?
    No, but the extent of the wellness coverage will be determined by which insurance plan you buy. The Basic Plan covers primarily accident and illness. The Plus Plan covers some wellness treatment and the Ultimate Plan covers the most wellness treatments.

  • What about spaying and neutering?

    All three policies cover both spaying and neutering.

  • What are the exclusions?
    Standard exclusions include:

    • Behavioral problems, training or therapy
    • Breeding or conditions relating to breeding
    • Grooming; special diets, pet foods, vitamins
    • Elective and/or cosmetic procedures such as docking of tails, de-clawing
    • Congenital diseases

     

    The three different levels of policies vary in the exclusions due to the extent of wellness coverage provided.

  • Does the insurance include prescription coverage?
    Prescriptions are covered when used to treat illness or injury.

  • How do I apply for Healthy Pet Insurance?

    You can apply by filling out an online form processed by our PolicyPointe system. This form can be accessed by selecting "Order Now" on the left side of the screen or the flashing "DogQuote" or "CatQuote" on the top right of the screen.

  • How much does coverage cost?
    For dogs, annual premiums range from $144 to $484. For cats, annual premiums range from $90 to $472. There are surcharges depending on where you live and the age of your pet.

  • Are premium payment plans available?
    Healthy Pet Insurance offers monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual premium payment options. Please ask our customer service representatives for details.

  • When will my pet's health coverage begin?
    Your pet's coverage for injuries and wellness will become effective approximately 10 business days after your application has been approved and your initial premium payment has been received.

  • Is coverage guaranteed?

    No, the application that you submit must be fully completed and reviewed by one of our underwriting specialists before coverage is granted.

  • What is PolicyPointe?

    PolicyPointe is our proprietary software application designed to reliably handle large volumes of transactional business. The system is a controlled, efficient and encrypts personal information while eliminating much paper handling.

  • When will I receive my policy?

    You will receive by mail a welcome letter, your policy and a claim form. Please call our toll free customer service number with the number if you do not receive your policy materials within two weeks of the date in which you applied.

  • What do I need to do to renew my policy?

    Your policy will be automatically renewed. You will receive our renewal package within 5 days of your renewal date. The only time you will be notified in advance of your renewal is if there is a rate change to your coverage.

  • What if I change my mind after signing up with Healthy Pet Insurance?

    You have 30 days from the effective date of the policy to review it and cancel with no obligation. If we have already received your premium, we will gladly give you a full refund provided no claims have been submitted or paid.

  • When will I be charged for the premium?

    Your payment is due once your policy has been approved, which is usually within 10 business days of when you order. You may call our customer service department with questions.

  • What happens after I've submitted my policy?

    After you submit your application and arrange for premium payment, you will receive a "Welcome Package" which will include your policy and all pertinent information as well as a claim form and instructions about claim handling.

  • How long of a waiting period exists before my pet's health coverage begins?

    The illness coverage has a 30 day waiting period.

  • What if I want to purchase a different plan after I’ve already enrolled?

    You may upgrade or downgrade your coverage within the first 30 days of your effective date or on the anniversary date of your policy (the anniversary date is one year from the effective date). If you wish to upgrade or downgrade your policy and it is beyond the first 30 days, or not the policy anniversary date, the policy you have in force at that time will be canceled and you will be issued a new policy. By issuing a new policy your pet(s) will be subject to underwriting, the $100 annual deductible will start over, along with the per incident and policy.

  • If a visit to the veterinarian is necessary, how do I file a claim?

    Within 30 days after the treatment has been provided, you simply send in the original bill, along with your veterinarian's name and address, to our office. From time to time, the insurance company may also ask for proof of your pet's identity, or veterinary records to determine a pre-existing condition.

  • Where do I obtain claim forms?

    A claim form will be sent to you with your policy. If you need additional copies, you can call the toll-free telephone number and receive additional copies via mail, fax or email. In the future, claim form will be available to from this website. Insureds will be able to go the website and print the form.

  • What proof do I need to supply to validate any claims that are filed?

    Currently, you need to provide the claim form along with the bill for services from your vet. You may be asked to provide a vet's signature and diagnosis as well. Claims may be submitted via mail or fax.

  • Does the insurance company pay the veterinarian or do I have to pay first and then be reimbursed?

    This policy is a reimbursement policy. When you submit a claim, you must submit proof that the bills have been paid.

  • How long do I have to wait until I receive reimbursement for claims that are filed?

    30 days from the receipt of a properly filed claim.
